Beijing Soft Material and Engineering High-tech Innovation Center Held its Plenary Session and Symposium

On March 26th , Beijing Soft Material and Engineering High-tech Innovation Center in Beijing University of Chemical Technology(BUCT) held the meeting to  report its work in the last-year and to appoint the director and members of its academic committee. The meeting was attended by researchers from BUCT and universities in Britain, America and Australia, as well as Deputy Director General Wang Song from State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and Director Cheng Jingang from Beijing Administration of Foreign Experts Affair.

Vice-president Wang Feng presided over the meeting and Deputy Director General Wang Song delivered a speech. President Tan Tianwei and Daan Frenkel(Professor of Chemistry Department in UC and Academician of Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie Van Wetenschappen(KNAW)) made opening addresses respectively. Afterwards President Tan Tianwei appointed Thomas Russell (Professor of University of Massachusetts(UM) at Amherst and Academician of National Academy of Engineering(NAE)) as Director of the Academic Committee, and Daan Frenkel, San Thang (Academician of Australian Academy of Science), Dai Liming (Chair Professor of Case Western Reserve University(CWRU)), Zhang Xi(Professor of Tsinghua University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)), Zhang Xian’en(Professor of Biophysics Department in CAS) and Wang Wenchuan(BUCT Professor) as members of the Committee.

After the appointment ceremony, the Center held the plenary session and symposium , when its six experts like Daan Frenkel, Thomas Russell, San Thang, Dai Liming, Professor Lee Cronin of University of Glasgow(UG), Professor Frantisek Svec of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the US made wonderful lectures on their research results and the future development of soft material science and engineering respectively. In the afternoon, all the PI participated in the discussion on the Center’s management rules where they expressed their own opinions and put forward many constructive proposals in a pleasant and warm atmosphere.

The Center, with the support of BUCT International Soft Material Research Center established in April, 2014, was approved to run officially by Beijing Municipal Government in September, 2015. As one of the firstly approved 13 Beijing High-tech Innovation Centers, the Center can receive 100 million RMB as its operational fund for five years from Beijing Municipal Finance Bureau.

The Center covers three research areas: Soft Material Science, Life Soft Material, Energy Conversion and Engineering. Apart from over 10 foreign PI, the Center will continue to attract outstanding personnel at home and abroad to  develop its advantageous subjects, promote theoretical researches and encourage scientific research innovation. At the same time, it will bring in innovative management mechanisms and systems to drive the development of other subjects by disciplinary integration.
