Cooking Class Starts at the Confucius Institute at the University of Miskolc

At 5p.m, October 15th, the first Chinese Cooking Class started at the Confucius Institute at the University of Miskolc. All the students were very interested in this new class and actively took part in.

This cooking class was co-lectured by the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute Zhu Xiaoyuan and Chinese teacher Liu Guoyan. Director Zhu prepared the home-style Stir Fried Shredded Potatoes. She started by introducing the ingredients, and then showed how to shred the potato. Students were all impressed by her skill of using the knife. Many students said they had never tried to shred potatoes and they would practice more back at home.

Ms. Liu presented the popular dish Kung Pao Chicken. After a brief introduction, many students picked up knives and cooking spoons, and made this dish together with Ms. Liu. Some of the students took out the notebooks and wrote down the detailed steps. They also studied the Chinese seasoning. It amazed the students that the various flavors of Chinese dishes depended on the cook’s sense.

Students all spoke highly of the teachers’ cooking skills after tasting the two dishes, which they described in Chinese as “very tasty”. Chinese cuisine is a unique culture. A simple dish as the Stir Fried Shredded Potatoes can encapsulate Chinese people’s modesty and spirit of inclusion. The friendship between Chinese and Hungarian people is deepened in the flavor of China.
